Babies know who’s on their team
And whom to turn to for comfort
At any given time if the day
And which of their loved ones they want to connect with
And which they want to playfully push away
So sometimes it’s mommy while at other moments, daddy is their man
And they choose to focus on just one at a time
Sometimes rejecting both parents and engaging with siblings only
It’s a game, really
One they know how to play
For they laugh when they push your arm away
As if saying, “I know you’ll be there when I’m ready,
So right now I just want you in the sidelines
And I’ll come find you when I want to
And then tell you about my day”
Babies are funny, unpredictable, real
You invest so much time, tears, and sweat in their care
And then they push you away randomly
You may start and wonder why
But if you look closely, you’ll notice the twinkle in baby’s eye
It’s just a game; they want you on their team
But it’s not your turn to bat, not just yet
But soon
