While growing up in my parent house
One of our favorite places was the playground
Two blocks away
It had a tall yellow slide
With lots and lots of steps to the top
And a wild ride down
Tons of fun
Most of the time it was not a problem to go
Until some of the neighborhood boys started to go too
And didn’t allow us entry
They’d keep the gate locked
Hold it shut
Throw sticks our way
And constantly think of other creative ways
To bully us
Prevent us
From entering
So we started going to a playground
With a tire swing
Also fun
But not the same
Now we are all adults
With families of our own
So I pray that those boys as the adults they are
Have learned to be kind
And are teaching their children to be kind as well
I like to think that they are
That they’ve changed
Grown up
And as I teach my children to perform acts of kindness
I pray for them
And for all the people out there
Who need to learn to be kind as well
