Voices from the past

Voices from the past
Saying that writers don’t make money
The big bucks
So why bother learning the art
You’d be better off going to school
To learn how to be
A nurse
Or a teacher
Maybe a therapist
Something to help you pay the bills

So you listen to those voices
And go to school to learn
How to teach
And you love what you do
Are passionate about it
Really
Truly
But you still have this urge within you to write

You silence it for many years
Thinking it silly to
Pick up the pen
Or type on the keyboard
Of your computer or phone
But one day all those thoughts that you’ve shut down for so many years
Resurface
Are begging to be told

So you start writing
Publish a book
Create a blog
Sign up for courses
And wonder why you haven’t done so
So long ago

So you tell others to be selective
In which voices they listen to
And how they make their choices
For life is not just about paying bills
Earning money
But also taking time to enjoy the process
And if writing is the way to go about that
Be sure to do so
Don’t shut down your skills
But if you do
Know that it’s never to late
To open those doors again
