Your Family

There’s the African American gentleman who works at the gas station
Not far from my home
Who called me his sister
He’s got it right

There’s the people driving in a car with blasting music
Rolled down their window and yelled something about white trash
As I’m walking with my children
They ask me, “Mommy, what was that?”
I say, “ignore that; they have nothing better to do”

There’s the most gentle Muslim teacher I work with
Who once said to me, “you know, we are cousins”
And I couldn’t agree more

Family is not just the people connected to you through your birth
They are your immediate family
But those you choose to adopt as you move through this journey called life
Your extended family
They can be found all over the world

Because of those individuals you can move forward
And make positive changes
Spread light and truth
In a world full of two types of people:
Those who want to pull others down
And those who want to pull people up

You choose your family by finding the second group of people
They will be your sisters
Your brothers
Your cousins
Your family
For life
